Purpose:
This program is designed to develop a set of background data on the Lower Passaic River and Newark Bay water quality that will:
(a) provide general information on current water quality relative to designated uses and applicable criteria
(b) identify any pertinent temporal patterns (e.g., seasonal, wet vs. dry periods, high vs. low stream flow regimes, etc.)
(c) provide a basis for comparing the relative significance of upstream vs. CSO load sources
(d) document ambient water quality improvements resulting from implementation of pollution control programs
Design and Rational:
The monitoring requirements for this study will allow an evaluation of long term water quality within the Lower Passaic River. The data collected herein will allow a realistic look at the existing water quality within the region, including potential regions where water quality standards are not being continuously met.
